Book Review
"Addiction: The Master Keys to Recovery"
by Michael De Vito, DC
Review by Timothy Feuling
This book should be on everyone's required reading list.
It's a MUST read for every human being who cares about other humans, a book you buy multiple copies of and show you love and care for an addict by putting it in his or her hands.
As a chiropractor, you need to read it so you can better understand and serve the addicts you encounter every day in your professional and personal life. Your curiosity and the time you invest in reading the principles in "Addiction: The Master Keys to Recovery” will serve you and your clients in a positive way, promises author Michael Dr. DeVito, DC, who teaches that abstinence is in fact the first stage of addiction.
"There was a time in our lives where we were not living in shame, when we did not feel empty, hollow and hopeless,” he points out. "We were not sick of every day. We were living in abstinence and then we left. This is where we enter the stage of experimentation, the next stage of addiction. At that point you aren't looking for a high or trying to escape life, you are simply seeking a new horizon of experience.” Dr. DeVito goes on to explain we're "natural explorers” and curious by nature about what else is out there. So, our next excursion takes us to recreational use of whatever we're on the path to becoming addicted to - and then... addiction!
DeVito's style of writing is incredibly alluring as he pulls you in chapter by chapter to learn more and more about addiction. Every person has addiction within arm's reach - you, your brother, sister, parents, grandparents, cousins, best friend, co-workers, neighbors. All of us have addiction close by. And many people who don't think they're an addict are in denial. They may not be as excessive as others, but addiction is a relative term. Either way, this book is one of the most powerful resources I've ever put my hands on. Having addiction in my immediate family, I had an amazing time tooling through page after page of this book. I was never bored. Quite the opposite, I didn't want to put it down.
You'd think a book like this would be full of technical jargon and typical, mind-numbing methodologies for dealing with something like addiction. Yet, it's nothing like that. It will make you laugh, cry, take deep breaths and more than anything else, it will help you better understand yourself and everyone around you at different levels and with different kinds of addictions.
"Addiction: The Master Keys to Recovery” wasn't written specifically for chiropractors but DeVito has more than 30 years of experience in chiropractic as a Northwestern College of Chiropractic graduate. He is a diplomate and board certified in Addictionology.
It's common knowledge that addiction is one of the most challenging, if not the most challenging of experiences a human being can go through. It tears families apart, it kills, maims, destroys relationships, ends jobs, causes pain and suffering for everyone in the addict's life. This book was written so the world might better understand the process of becoming an addict and of digging oneself out of that hole. The author will personally connect with you through its pages as he takes you through 21 Master Keys to recovering from addiction.
"Addiction: The Master Keys to Recovery,” has made a huge impression on many people, including Rudy Ruettiger, the subject of the 1993 motion picture, "Rudy,” the Notre Dame Football story, who said: "Dr. De Vito has written an exceptional guide for anyone seeking to overcome addiction and improve the performance and quality of their lives. A valuable tool for a lifetime of success!”
Dr. DeVito deserves sincere thanks for writing such a powerful, thought-provoking and personal book that will serve millions on their path to recovery, while helping millions more better understand the addicts in their lives they love and care for. I give his book very high marks and plan on continuing to spread the word about the powerful work he's doing. At just $14.95 for a soft copy, or $9.95 for the digital version, this book is a steal.
